September 26, 2019
President Jennifer Stanek brought the September 2019 meeting of the Memphis Herb Society to order at 7:00 in the Goldsmith Room at the Memphis Botanic Garden. Members and guests were given a warm welcome and all those that brought refreshments were extended a special thanks. Members and guests were reminded to renew their memberships for the upcoming year, which will run through December 31, 2020. October is the deadline for renewing your membership if you would like your name in the Membership Directory. Jennifer also reminded us to check the Memphis Herb Society’s Facebook page and website for information about upcoming events and volunteer opportunities.
On motion made, seconded and approved, the August meeting minutes as presented in the September Newsletter were approved.
Sherri McCalla gave the Herb Garden report. The Herb Garden is weedy and in need of volunteers to help weed. On October 12th, there will be an Herbal Work Study program beginning at 8:00. Participants will work until about 10:00 a.m. and then Sherri will teach a class on bitters. Updating the Herb Garden signage is a continuing project.
All those members that brought refreshments were thanked and a drawing was held for door prizes.
Jennifer Stanek then presented the Bylaws amendments recommended by the Board to address the confusion that has arisen regarding half-priced memberships. A vote on this Bylaw amendment will be taken at the October 24, 2019 meeting. Jennifer invited anyone with questions to contact her directly at or after our meeting.
Article 2 of the Bylaws currently reads:
“The annual dues of the Memphis Herb Society shall be $25.00 for individual memberships and $30.00 for family memberships (family in the same household). Dues are payable January 1 of each year. Members whose dues have not been received by April 1 shall be dropped from the membership rolls. After June 1 and until January 1, dues shall be half-price for first-time members only.”
The proposed amendment of Article 2 would read:
“The annual dues of the Memphis Herb Society shall be $25.00 for individual memberships and $30.00 for family memberships (family in the same household). Dues are payable January 1 of each year. Members whose dues have not been received by April 1 shall be dropped from the membership rolls.
Jennifer Stanek then introduced our speaker, Chris Cosby. His topic for the evening was Reflections of a Family Herbalist – Growing and Using Herbs as a Primary Form of Healthcare. Chris Cosby has over twenty years’ experience growing and working with herbs. He shared some important insights gained from working with his family on their healthcare needs. Chris emphasized the need to know your constitution and your energetics. Keep a journal of your preparations and the results. No one herb will always work for one thing. Lessons come from what doesn’t work as well as from what works.
Following the presentation, the meeting was adjourned.
36 members and 27 guests were in attendance for the September meeting.
The next meeting of the Memphis Herb Society will take place on October 24, 2019.
