WHEN THE GUMS “GOT RICH:” THE LOST BEEKEEPING WORLD OF THE 19TH CENTURY SOUTH WITH A.T. SMITH

This presentation explores the beekeeping practices and customs of the 19th century South, including bee-related plant and herbal lore.

A.T. (Tyson) Smith has a PhD in U.S. History from the University of Mississippi. He has taught U.S History at the college level since 2013 and has delivered public lectures on Memphis history for the Pink Palace Museum. He is interested in keeping bees in horizontal hives and builds his own hives and swarm traps. He is currently researching for a book on beekeeping in the American South.
